Good tutorial. ...Close
Preview
Edit
Unknown said...
Good tutorial. After being out of the Warhammer game for 15 years I am just getting back into it. I always wanted to do a snowy army and have just completed a 50 power rating death guard army with snow bases using this method.... I have also used this same method to completely cover my 6'x4' battlefield lol.

At the moment it's just a tundra with hills but I plan on getting snowy scenery eventually as well. Want to do a soulblight gravelords army and get some spooky snowy trees and buildings.

If anyone's interested in also doing a whole battlefield it took just shy of 15kg of baking soda and around 4 litres of PVA lol.

One thing I have found is that a thin coat of PVA over the whole board once the mix dries really toughens the mix up and doesn't affect the overall appearance. I'm planning on doing this to my models as well but it's not essential with them as the smaller amounts of mix seem to set a lot better.

Doing a whole board it takes ages to dry and the finish ends up a bit powdery (for me anyway), the coat of PVA completely seals and toughens the board.

Would put a photo up but not sure how to

23 October 2021 at 12:39

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17842542511097636272noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2886884149916118609.post-29629247675345309032020-09-30T17:07:38.549+01:002020-09-30T17:07:38.549+01:00Really nice tutorial, I've been wanting my Tau...Really nice tutorial, I've been wanting my Tau to have snowy bases, so I've gone out and gotten some stuff. Either pick the original mix off and try and do it again but thicker, or you can try and add a large amount of PVA to a bit water (like a lot of PVA) and then paint over the original stuff, the big risk there is that if you don't keep the edge of the bases clean (i.e. the black rim) they will look like the snow has run over the edge. Do a tester and see (allow for a long drying time)
Let me know if the tester works or email me direct?
Hope it helpsMark Grudgingshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11001513847407116361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2886884149916118609.post-86545188235156938702019-02-11T18:55:02.958+00:002019-02-11T18:55:02.958+00:00Sorry for the late response! And it did so really fast, in about a month it already looked really yellow and dirty, it was only one of the bases though! How old is the oldest piece you have done with this method? etc?

Thank you very much for the amazing article, by the way! I've always disliked snow basing; it seemed unrealistic that snow would fall in strange lines and onnly land in occasional clumps. Sounds like the mix was too Bicarb and water heavy.

If you take some PVA, water it slightly (you need more glue than water but it shouldnt be gloopy), and reapply over the crumbly bits (do a little tester model first) that should dry pretty rock solid. You will have to clean your rims again as the mix will likely drip over but it should go pretty damn solid after.

Its a problem I've had once or twice when i've used a little pva, and a little water, then to get the consistency right ive added more water rather that more water and PVA, its better as both.

Also, if you store this stuff loose with metal miniatures that can bump against it they can knock bits off too.

Hope that helps, let me know?Mark Grudgingshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11001513847407116361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2886884149916118609.post-48644090883309493632016-09-17T21:27:35.345+01:002016-09-17T21:27:35.345+01:00Hi Mark, I've been using your method of PVA + ...Hi Mark, I've been using your method of PVA + bicarb + touch of water and even after it dries it still comes off if I touch it.
