Weekly progress; ALL THE SONS OF HORUS!

So I lucked out bigtime. This is the latest acquisition to the fold. An acquisition that DOUBLES my Sons of Horus army, and likely trebles the amount of resin in my army.

State of the Desk, Adsecularis and early Sons of Horus teardown

Last month I managed to get 25 of these guys converted from a combination of the Mechanicus Vanguard and a selection of Chaos Cultists that I had.

Farewell to the Sons

Very much self indulgently I wanted to say goodbye to the Sons of Omega Chapter as they become the Sons of Horus. Here follows their conception and an added chapter for their final days before they go for good.

History
Founding: 8th Founding, M33-M34
In late M33, an Administrative conclave of the Segmentum Solar determined that reported levels of insurrection arising from within the great and empty expanse of the Solarus Void had become too high to entirely ignore. For many centuries the scattered worlds that bridged the gap between Terra and the vast arm of the Segmentum Pacificus had been quiet, their remoteness being their own defence. Whilst the warp-routes that traversed the realm to the critical hiveworlds of Methalor and Macharia were amongst the most stable in the entire Imperium, those that turned into the lightless realms of the Void quickly became fractious and unreliable.

Make Heresy Era Space Marines from 40k ones on a budget: Part 1; Breaking apart.

Short attention spans can be a boon sometimes, this is my desk at the moment
That big blob of mostly Green are my Sons of Omega 40k force, currently and gradually being converted into a 30k Sons of Horus force.

I loved these guys, seriously. Look at the beginning of this blog for proof. Lots of attention lavished and time spent.

They did their job well. And then I read the Heresy rules.

Bring me my scalpel!

Its a Ramblef**k is what it is: Scratchbuilt Rapier Weapons Battery.

Dan Abnett made me say that. He really did (He's also back! http://theprimaryclone.blogspot.co.uk/). I got hobby-antsy over the weekend so scratch built something.

I'd had a dry spell of decent new PC games to run alongside the hobbyage and in the last month I've revisited Civ 5, Simcity 5, Star Wars Republic Commando and Dragon Age Origins because the older ones just are better. Lacking focus. and having assembled everything in my 40k stuff box I felt like I needed an outlet. Picked up the iPad and saw the A-man is back. He used the colourfully indistinct phrase of 'cockwomble', this then lodged in my brain.

Hence this; A Ramblef**k Legion Rapier Weapons Battery, (unpainted as yet).

40,000 Apocalyptic commitments needed

We tried our first large-scale game a couple of months back, where we tried out the Apocalypse ruleset with 7th Edition. To celebrate we tried a 40,000 point game. Here follows a breakdown of the our first experiences with the system of Apocalypse, 7th Edition, and the weekend setup.

Being championed by my good friend Bave, who managed the entire planning of the thing we set a date, and started checking how many points those invited collectively had, and how much we could field, to see what would be worth trying out. After bandying about for several days for sizes, we went for a game that would be 20,000 points a side.

Ambitious, epic, awesome, but possibly a case of eyes being bigger than stomach!

New Deathwing Video game trailer

Well this looks sufficiently badass.
Check out the blurb below the video, appears to be shot with the Unreal ingame engine. Just a shame about the scale of the final...thing.

Killteam

I’m going to say three things.
- No I’m not looking forwards to 7th Edition
- I didn’t know my stomach lining would look like that
- Moving house as a couple does not mean that you can prioritise a game room over an extra bedroom!

Glean for that what you will. On to gaming. Killteam!

Time and 'Tides wait for no man/Weekend games

Oof, some big games over the weekend. Big Riptide-heavy games. A 3k, 4k, and a 1.5k point games all in a short weekend.
Having ousted the wife to stay elsewhere, 2 of my gaming buddies came round to drink beer, eat chicken wings and play some 40k games (order optional).
One (we’ll call him ‘Bave’) is a Tau and Ultramarines player, and the other (we’ll call him ‘Den’) has Tau and Blood Angels. Between them, my buddies have around 4500 points of Tau, this includes 4 Riptides and a R'vana. Playing my Marines with these guys before I’ve now accepted my tactics to dealing with the ever-present Riptides.

Ignore em!

Lets play with proxies!

With the sheer volume of bodies needed for a proper guard army (the basic platoon for 130 points is 25 guys) you're gonna need to build up those spares and those extra bodies that can be added in as your list changes.

For the thrifty player in most of us, during the interim this means proxies;

Reclaimed mini's

I worked out recently that of my Sons of Omega Space Marine army 31/87 (or 35%) of the models (vehicles and troops) that I own are reclaimed mini's.

Thats a lot. The non-reclaimed troops were those from the Dark Vengeance set, sniper scouts, a Forgeworld Land Speeder Tempest, a Razorback, and an Ironclad.

All the rest? Imposters!

Reclaimed mini's come with one gigantic benefit; cost.

This is weighed against their pitfalls that come inherently with them;
- Time to strip them
- Paint finish
- Unknown quality.
