Starting a Necromunda Goliath Gang Guide 1/3; Collecting, Converting, Painting
The biggies, the bruisers, the forge-frenzied-gene-packed-gunning-for-your-guts boys in (mostly) red. The Goliaths!
These were a great poster child for the newest edition of Necromunda, if you wanted something to grab you, then this was definitely the right choice.

Painting Operation Icestorm Nomads
Sometimes you have to make some time for the squishy ones that supply
you with food and companionship (in that order of priority).
I co-bought Operation Icestorm with a friend of mine and have played it more with
my awesome wife than him. The git (*waves*). Whilst wife and I have been playing 10+ games we did so with unpainted, unglued figures without arms, to
get the hang of it.
My contribution to family togetherness was getting these Infinity figures painted and ready to use in game. Because of wuv. Duh.

State of the Desk: Dark Mechanicus
Desk in Progress. Update on the random stuff going on...
Here I have some easy Scyllax Guardian Automata that I’ve knocked together with a good friend Den’s cast-offs from the new Mechanicus Kataphron sprues, these can also be used as Servitors/ Servo-Automata as needed.

Ogryn Flagellants and the Spawn-o-Raptor
Everything in my house is being hacked and sawed to pieces at the moment. Loving the Razor saw (please ignore that last comment FBI scanner), but it doesn't bode well for my childhood.
In other news, Ebay has been its eternally-damned self to me, I won a still on sprue box of Chaos spawn for £13 (RRP £25) and then lost a fully painted Forge world Imperial Guard Praetor Assault launcher for £46 (RRP £115) , I bid £45 and stopped! Woah woe woe.

Forgeworld Ogryn Charonites; interpretations
So this latest image from Forgeworld I'm going to say is an Horus Heresy Ogryn Charonite.
So for anyone that doesn't know, the Horus Heresy; Conquest book basically has Marine-murdering Ogryn Servitors as an available Elites choice for the Solar Auxillia.
They looked awesome, and as I needed a project for my fantasy Ogres that was multi-purpose (i.e. could be both an Ogryn for Astra Militarum, a Ogryn with dags for Traitor Guard, or a Charonite for Solar Auxilia) I started to convert some. Obviously they would be traitors, whether Guard, Mechanicus, or actually traitor so would be fairly gribbly.
And then this dropped into my inbox. Look at the scale of it! The studded steampunk armour format that is very much Solar Auxillia!
And that Fist. Mmmm.

Its a Ramblef**k is what it is: Scratchbuilt Rapier Weapons Battery.
Dan Abnett made me say that. He really did (He's also back! http://theprimaryclone.blogspot.co.uk/). I got hobby-antsy over the weekend so scratch built something.
I'd had a dry spell of decent new PC games to run alongside the hobbyage and in the last month I've revisited Civ 5, Simcity 5, Star Wars Republic Commando and Dragon Age Origins because the older ones just are better. Lacking focus. and having assembled everything in my 40k stuff box I felt like I needed an outlet. Picked up the iPad and saw the A-man is back. He used the colourfully indistinct phrase of 'cockwomble', this then lodged in my brain.
Hence this; A Ramblef**k Legion Rapier Weapons Battery, (unpainted as yet).

Proud momma hen; my Hades Breaching Drill.
With the phrase stolen from Sergeant Terry of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, I would like to present my favourite model of the moment, the lovely (completed) Hades Breaching Drill. Mmmmm.
This put all the little things into practice and I'm liking the result thus far.

Ahhh I cut your face with my mind-knives!
You've gotta love
the crazies of 40k, the flagellants, the real screw-loose Inquisitors (Bam, your
world is dead! Bam, your world is dead too! Bam, Bam, Bam) and pretty
much ever illustration from John Blanche ever (Cables in there? Really?)

I’m hoping that
GW release something entitled ‘Everything on Earth that was weird before the
great crusade; Ever’, because some of the apocalyptic armies that cropped up in
that time are so rich and packed with such fantastic themes.
Alan Bligh has
really nailed the character and the legacy of these hosts with short and sweet
ephemeral names like the Crimson Conclave, the Antioch Court, the Million Hand
march. You can really picture the swaying banners of insanity over the heads of
these hordes.

Get yer gun on! Son's Of Sek Heavy Weapons teams
Bring on the tripods and the heavy weapons. These were the first batch of painted Sons that I tried to keep closer to the descriptions as given in the Gaunt books, whereby the black body armour they used had a glossy finish.
Previously I'd tried drybrushing over a black base, with highlights.
However I didn't like the finish that it gave, though admittedly they looked decent on the battlefield. So this was recommended to me after seeing the glossy black sheen-shields upon the front of the Mechanicum Thallax shock troops (Drool)

Dragging a flag behind a tank!
Englands low lying areas are suffering from an excess of wet. And puff. This excess has meant that by the time you read this, the lower 10% of my shoes is moist, and my coiff is likely to be off-kilter.
Another bit of inspiration that I added to my Sons due to this all weather-weather was one that clearly showed that the Sons of Sek really don't like the Guard;
Flag-drag.

Whilst enjoying the excellent guard tactica on Cadia's Creed I was very much captured by the Primaris Psyker and one of the nicest ranged psychic powers in the game

Painting Traitor Guard tanks; Sons Of Sek, Part 1.
As with all starter armies, I wanted to get playing with my force as soon as possible, so with that in mind it was time to move to the vehicles for the Son's. With some Chaos cultists to proxy, some heavier stuff was needed.
First up, a little history from the fluff's POV;

Sons of Sek; Paint schemes and Berocca paintbrush holders
So, time to attempt some colour.
First things first, basic palette.
Again, teasing data from the books shows that the SOS have yellow ochre uniform, with glossy black body armour, which rose over their mouths into a hand cupping into a gorget.
For some reason though, a paragraph lodged in my memory that indicated that the SOS wore 'acid yellow' uniforms, and whose belts, bindings, and accoutrements was formed from the flayed skin of their enemies. However, without being able to find this in the fiction, I went for the option which I could guarantee I could find.
Basic Palette
So the basic palette was nice and simple;

Santa with his Sons
I'm a firm believer in some solid Christmas-list-making, you get what you want, you get what you need and if you pad the thing out to a large enough degree you can still capture that 'whats under the tree magic' of childhood.
I did ask for toy tanks and toy soldiers like you should as well. First up my lovely wife bought me some of these;

Sons Of Sek; Stormtroopers
So, with me still working on my Marines whilst I waited for the Christmas rush of Guard boxes I felt the burning need to convert something.
Oddly, searching for 'Metal soldiers' on Ebay popped up 9 Stormtroopers, including backpacks sergeant, flamer and grenade launcher troopers for £5; bargain!
Like all of the old metal kits, without access to a particularly hefty craft-knife or serious files, the large details of the Stormtroopers would be relatively hard to change. Instead, I focused my efforts on overloading this elite inception force with an abundance of smaller details.
