Catch-up-alanche! Speed painting with contrast

Just a little video for anyone not sure of whether Contrasts are worth it. I have a friend called...Bames, who is wary of painting. Contrasts are great paints, and will easily help anyone get through their stack of scary looking models at speeeeeeeed.

My cheap and lazy rivets Tutorial

So every scratch builder has their own way of doing things, and all work differently. My take on these is below, and my results are here and the easiest process to do them quickly too.

So I had a batch of stuff scratchbuilt and wanted the ability to make them have some texture, without always relying on material like PVA/greenstuff/Modelling clays etc to do so.

Height is what the Underhive needs, for all its low down, sump-slicking goodness, there's a whole world of pylons and vertical scariness for bullets to explore. Its a long way down from the high points too!

These were a great poster child for the newest edition of Necromunda, if you wanted something to grab you, then this was definitely the right choice.

So I made some tiles. Some pitted Mortalis tiles.  I'd wanted to expand my board, but not my debt, so I chose to use some of the out of the box Necromunda tiles into some filler ones for the battlefield.
With some Polyfilla and a bit of PVA mix and a press mould, I made some more flat surfaces for my terrain to sit on.

So I knew this was going to be a labour of love but this has gone on for a fair old time!

I made a fair amount more progress on the Snow board One of the main things that I see whenever a Snow board is referenced is the disparity between blue and grey tinting to the snow.

Normally when you see these boards completed they always have a very grey tint to them, and that's not necessarily the look that I would expect to have for a field of snow.

See the picture, blue sky, dark shadows on the snow.

You'd expect blue with ice, not so much with snow.

I ran a couple of testers to see if I could identify which look I wanted most across the whole board.

So this has taken a fair amount of time, but mainly due to this being stop-start. Doing this all in one go would be far easier, less mixing stuff, less building etc. 

I started with the divider section as a tester. this should help me see how things work and how the actual process would work.

Weekly Progress: Sons of Horus Rhinos and Squad + starting on the Knight

Quick one this week. I managed to get a lot of Sons of Horus churned through including these 2 boxes. Sadly, they aren't true to the period of the Heresy, but you gotta make do sometimes.

Tutorial; Cheap, easy snow for Warhammer bases Part 2

As the article about Snow seems to be extremely popular, I thought I’d make a follow up.

The prior article is here: a simple recipe for making snow bases for Warhammer. It’s a nice read, some good tips, and processes. It’s a tutorial. Obviously,

The snow mix that I swear by is simply Bicarbonate of Soda, PVA Glue, and Water. Nice and easy and cheap!

The tutorial covers how to mix and apply but it is brief in its description, it doesn’t address some the factors that I have finessed with this technique lately. So on to Part 2!

Invaluable Warhammer tools; Battlescribe Roster builder

One of the most useful tools that I would recommend to fellow players of Wargames is Battlescribe. This is a mobile and PC based list builder that I really would struggle to live without, and heartily recommend to all (not an Ad you’ll be surprised to learn! Just really like it).

So Battlescribe is a third party app that has been around for a couple of years, and is incredibly useful to keep your lists and rules in a nearby format.

Essentially, it uses data catalogues uploaded by the gaming community to allow regular joes to build viable gaming lists.

That big blob of mostly Green are my Sons of Omega 40k force, currently and gradually being converted into a 30k Sons of Horus force. 

I loved these guys, seriously. Look at the beginning of this blog for proof. Lots of attention lavished and time spent. 

They did their job well. And then I read the Heresy rules.

Magnetise your Knight Titan

I was so looking forwards to having a brand new toybox when I learned how easy magnets were. I imagined every tank having a host of swappable bits that would give my armies a new lease of life..

In truth; 

pfffffttttssplaaateeek....

Magnets. They are useful. They are also pain in the arse to use constantly. 

General observation? YOU WILL NOT USE THEM AS MUCH AS YOU THINK YOU WILL.
I realised that I barely used any of the magnetised troops that I went to the effort of creating. Most of the people I've given alternative loadouts I instead simply use their stock load out, or stick them with blu-tac.

(Slightly) Cheaper Zone Mortalis; Scatter Terrain

As well as all the Sons of Sek fun and games, I’ve been cracking on with some generic scatter terrain that will work for Mortalis, and potentially Infinity as well (although this stuff does look pretty gothic).

Some resources first, literally anything works for small terrain, if it looks interesting, grab it, keep it.

Dan Abnett made me say that. He really did (He's also back! http://theprimaryclone.blogspot.co.uk/). I got hobby-antsy over the weekend so scratch built something.

I'd had a dry spell of decent new PC games to run alongside the hobbyage and in the last month I've revisited Civ 5, Simcity 5, Star Wars Republic Commando and Dragon Age Origins because the older ones just are better. Lacking focus. and having assembled everything in my 40k stuff box I felt like I needed an outlet. Picked up the iPad and saw the A-man is back. He used the colourfully indistinct phrase of 'cockwomble', this then lodged in my brain. 

Hence this; A Ramblef**k Legion Rapier Weapons Battery, (unpainted as yet).

More terrain in an hour or less; Sewer entrances.

I mean another bit of terrain in a single... Not more terrain in the same singular period but more pieces in successive...You know what I mean.

Some usable pieces for a oh-so distant cityfight board I'll one day own. Sewers!

Less so the 'stewing with faeces' kind and more the 'why don't we pop up and gun you down' kind.

To start, some relatively easy to find objects.Coffee pods. 

Terrain in an hour or less

It can be done. Admittedly you'll need some fast drying glue, and some good weather. Here are four bunkers/storm shelters/domiciles completed in under an hour.

Buying terrain is great. But I can justify an hour of my time to save some money.
